Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia. It was organized by MSU jointly with the Zoological Institute and Paleontological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as with Russian Entomological Society. More than 70 people participated in the Symposium, most of them being scientists as well as graduate and postgraduate students from RAS institutes, universities and other institutions in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. In addition to the plenary meeting, there were sessions titled: "Morphology and systematics", "Faunistics and zoogeography" and "Ecology, physiology and behavior" followed by a roundtable discussion "Methodological and terminological items in myrmecology". 38 oral papers and 20 posters were presented at the Symposium. At a special presentation, participants were given basic information about the ISH, its history, structure and activities. Congratulations! NEWS JULY 2006: **** EXPANSION OF ISH EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE **** In spring 2006, ISH membership voted for the addition of a two new positions to the executive committee: 1. NEWS JANUARY 2006: **** HYMENOPTERA ONTOLOGY PROPOSED **** At the ISH meeting in South Africa, Fredrik Ronquist proposed that HymAToL and ISH jointly develop an ontology of morphological terminology that is, we decide on a standard vocabulary to describe hymenopteran morphology, and we define how these terms relate to one another. For example, the 'cubitus' is a 'type of' 'wing vein' and a 'wing vein' is 'part of' a 'wing'. The ontology will then serve a number of functions: 1. a standard set of ISH-approved terms that hymenopterists are encouraged to use. If we all use the same vocabulary we will be more effective communicators. 2. It will be converted into an online, illustrated atlas of hymenopteran morphology that is richly illustrated, searchable, and includes verbal definitions of structures. We will then have an incredible resource that helps us with our communication. 3. The ontology will be incorporated into the search algorithms of several databases, e.g. MorphBank. For more details about the ontology project and how to contribute please contact Andy Deans (adeans at scs.fsu dot edu)
